Artist Call Out

The Box Unfolded - Call Out November 2008 Juried Exhibition FLIPmo is a non-profit organization currently accepting submissions for The Box Unfolded exhibition in November 2008. The application deadline is September 15th, 2008. Fifteen artists will be chosen by September 20th for the exhibition and their work will be displayed at the CACHe gallery in Sai Yin Pun, Hong Kong for one month as well as on the online gallery. All submissions for the exhibition must relate to the theme as detailed in the paragraphs below.

Theme: The Box Unfolded

The Box Unfolded is a juried exhibition for the promotion of International Filipino contemporary art, ideas and culture. Established and emerging Filipino artists, as well as International Artists addressing contemporary Filipino culture, are asked to create works within a box-like space relating to the issue of cultural identity/identities. New media art, short films, sound installation, installation, photography, painting, street art, digital art, sculptures and mixed media are acceptable types of art.

The Box Unfolded exhibition is inspired by the “balikbayan / returnees box”. Within this exhibition each artist will propose to create their work in one of the 15 available spaces provided. In this case, we would like to the artists to treat each space as their own balikbayan box. However, instead of embellishing their boxes with typically favored items such as clothes, toys, and chocolates, these contemporary artists are asked to fill, unfold and exchange their personal experiences of being a Filipino living in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Abroad.

During the opening venue, artist communities from Hong Kong and Manila will come together through full scale live video feed and celebrate Filipino culture with a guest DJ and performance art. Three weekend evening events will be scheduled to attract the Hong Kong public to the exhibit. The scheduled events will include film screenings, live painting and live music performances. In addition to the exhibit, a shop gallery area will be included selling designer Filipino urban fashion and accessories.

YOUR BODY + PHILIPPINE MAP = C2

FLIPmo TEAM BRAINSTORMING WITH RHETT AND SOME SHOPPIN'

Ransacking Rhett Eala's C2 Boutique at the Fort was part of the agenda. Leaving the place a tattered mess was not. We were initially looking for "uniforms" to wear for the opening night of the Box Unfolded Exhibit in November this month... that was until we found out we'll probably get to wear different ones now that Rhett pondered designing a Limited Edition collection especially for the exhibit. FLIPmo would have been happy if he shared his current collection with all the Hongkers, but now that he brought it up, we think it would be very interesting to see what kind of designs C2 could muster up for the Hong Kong show.

Its a pretty simple concept really, the Philippine Map in various colors adorned all over your body. On Shirts, Shorts, Slacks, and Dresses. Who knew that 7000+ islands would look good plastered twice on a shirt? What a way to wear and show Pinoy Pride at the same time.

So what will "C2 My Pilipinas x the Box Unfolded" shirts look like? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Corporate Partners and Sponsorship

The last two weeks have been really crazy in trying to get Sponsorship Partners for "The Box Unfolded" show. Good news is, we've been making headway with media (as in not-MTV), magazines (as in a new International-yet-local name), and corporate sponsors (think Jet Li and Manny Pacquiao drinking beers on the beach of Boracay with their favorite thongs ie. Flip-Flops.) We can't name any names as of yet, until they're confirmed... but the show is really solidifying bit by every little bit.

Now, we are still open to more opportunities for sponsors and corporate partnerships and if you or anyone you know are interested in partnering with the event, the sponsorship tiering is as listed below:

Countdown to the "Box Unfolded"

FILIPINO ARTISTS TO SHOW CONTEMPORARY ART AND DESIGN IN HK
November 2008 will mark the launch of FLIPmo’s (Filipino Creatives in HK) first big event in Hong Kong with the planned, The Box Unfolded Exhibition to be located in the historic CACHe (The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage) Building in Sai Ying Pun. The building boasts two levels of exhibition space as well as an outdoor garden and auditorium for big group functions.

CONTEMPORARY FILIPINO ART AND DESIGN MAKING NOISE!
Within the last year, Filipino Contemporary Art and Design in Hong Kong and the Philippines has been gaining more and more attention and acclaim internationally. Exhibitions shown this year at OSAGE by Hong Kong and Manila-based Filipino artists, and ART HK 08 by the Drawing Room Gallery from Makati, displayed contemporary Filipino works whose success was evident in rapid sales.

REFLECTING ON OUR PAST and OUR CULTURE
History of the Hong Kong-Phillipine connection has been defined by trade, export, a sharing of resources (evident by the number of Domestic Helpers located here), as well as tourism. With the Box Unfolded Exhibit, FLIPmo aims to use this solid connection to help identify even further what it means to be a Contemporary “Filipino” today defined dually by roots of birth and migration.

WORKING ON UNFOLDING THE BOX
The term “Box Unfolded” refers to the “Balikbayan / Returnees Box”, a box that Overseas Filipinos fill with gifts and novelty goods for their friends and relatives in the Philippines and Abroad. The exhibition is a literal and ideological unfolding and exposure of a Filipino’s wealth, adopted culture, values, and lives as a Continental and Global Filipino today. These international artists are given “box” spaces in which to treat as their own “Balikbayan Box” unfolded, expressed, and exchanged.

Artists and Designers of any ethnicity are invited to apply for the November show. Sponsorships and Donations are most certainly welcome. The “Artist Call Out” is now available via the FLIPmo BLOG at http://flipmo-hk.blogspot.com.
Deadline for the Artist Call Out is September 15, 2008.

You're Team China, We're Team Manila

Box Unfolded Project collaborators Team Manila, have made a name for themselves at home with a boutique at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell, selling everything from graphic tees to Lomos. Now they're making waves abroad. Here's a link to two features, the first one by SMILE magazine and the other from last week's TIME Magazine. FLIPmo is excited to have them on board, and hope that the Filipino pride and humor emblazoned on Tees and stickers resonate with all audiences.
